Speaking of seeing Catholicism as great news, when I first read this short article, “Why I Don’t Call Myself a Gay Christian,” I was amazed. “Who is this guy?” I wondered. His article was so well-written: dead-on in terms of Church teaching, full of nuance and charity, and his explanations made sense and were deeply satisfying. In my opinion, he covered everything perfectly. The fact that he speaks from the position as a “Roman Catholic, living with a homosexual inclination” gave his thought added weight.
Later on I read his article, “In Defense of the Church’s Challenging Language on Homosexuality,” in which he addressed the very difficult teaching of the homosexual inclination as ‘objectively disordered,’ a topic that few venture into and few explain well. Here again he explained the teaching with nuance, accuracy and charity.
I was delighted to come across part of his story in this video, “Desire of the Everlasting Hills.” Here he shares his personal suffering and joy concerning his homosexual inclination. It’s an amazing story of hope and the triumph of Jesus’ love for us. Getting to know the person behind his thought gave me a deeper appreciation for his thought.
Finally, this interview gives us even more great information. He says at the beginning, “I really want to communicate that the Church is the place where the good news truly resides concerning homosexuality! You know, the last place people would think you’d go to is the Catholic Church. I’m actually a person who I can say that I converted to the Catholicism because of this issue, because of the truth of this issue, and I want to proclaim that from the mountain tops.”
